Adam "Careless Norton"

I got into the harp after hearing "Moaning at Midnight" by Howling Wolf. That was in 1990 and the start of my being "obsessed" by blues harp.

I was 20 years old then and my ears were open mostly to the late 60's acid rock bands, but after that one song it was Chicago blues all the way and has been ever since.

My "main men" on the harp were, and still are, Big Walter Horton, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Little Walter and, from England, Paul Lamb.

I played in the early 90's in what I would call a "mates" band, which wasn't great but invaluable to learning the ropes, which I did from dynamite drummer Ray Marquis.

I then played in a band where I met Bad Town Blues pianist Ray Bartrip, whom I had heard as a member of a house band at a jam. I remember thinking he was the best blues pianist I had ever heard, and I wasn't far wrong.

I also knew a great guitar player in Clive Mulcahy who had a reputation as one of the best in the area. I could feel a plan coming on .......

"Oozat geezer with

Adam Norton?"

It's "Junior Wells!"

(Can you tell which one of them is more inebriated?)

I decided to ask the pair of them to join a band I was forming and, after several threats, they agreed. We then began the long process of looking for a real "blues" rhythm section.

Although the band went forward it didn't find it's feet totally until we were lucky enough to find our drummer Reg Patten, a great dynamic, fiery, Chicago blues style drummer who playes with great "feel".

Then bass player Jamie Lawrence joined the band and I was very pleased as he fitted in very well.

Our debut album has had a great response and is the basis for building our reputation.

It was my dream to get a real "evil" sounding Chicago style blues bad together that was very traditional in the 12 bar style. I am glad that the album turned out like that and we play the same way live.

I love playing the harp, heavily amplified, fat toned, whatever you like to call it and I would like to thank all the people who have helped me achieve it.
